Green Tea is an excellent antioxidant. Each capsule of this product contains 400mg of Green Tea, 200mg of which is EGCG - the most powerful antioxidant found in Green Tea. One capsule is equivalent to 3 cups of high quality green tea.
Recently one of the largest studies on Green Tea came to an end. Starting in 1994, the study lasted for a period of 11 years and examined over 40,00 healthy adults in Japan. The results of this study demonstrated that people who drank 5 or more cups of green tea per day, benefited by a 16 percent reduction in mortality rates for all diseases! Furthermore, those who drank at least 5 cups per day, reduced their chances of dying from cardiovascular disease by 26% and 52% for strokes (more details of the study below). This is obviously very significant and reinforces the claims made by scientists over the past few years that green tea offers numerous health benefits. These benefits are derived mainly from green tea's abundance of highly potent anti-inflammatory antioxidants (in particular EGCG) which have been shown to effectively reduce atherosclerosis (the build-up of plaque in the arteries & blood vessels) whilst reducing blood cholesterol levels.
Green Tea Study in Japan (Ohsaki National Health Insurance Cohort Study)
This study followed 40,530 adults between the ages of 40 to 79 on people living in North East Japan. The study started in 1994 and with participants being followed up for up to eleven years.
Participants who drank 5 or more cups per day of green tea had a significantly reduced risk of death from all causes, and in particular, risk of death from cardiovascular disease, when compared to those who consumed less than one cup per day. The results were as follows.
Women
23% reduction in death from any cause
31% reduction in death from CVD
62% reduction in death from stroke
Men
12% reduction in death from any cause
22% reduction in death from CVD
42% reduction in death from stroke
From these results we can see that green tea offered even greater benefits for women. It was noted from the study that more men smoked more cigarettes than the women did, so there is the distinct possibility that smokers derive less benefit from green tea than none smokers.
There may also be a link with the female sex hormone oestrogen. The ingredients in green tea may be interacting with oestrogen to enhance heart protection.
